Common Questions

What is Section 180?
Section 180 is a tax provision dating back to 1960 that allows landowners engaged in the business of agriculture to deduct the value of residual fertilizer and soil nutrients already present in the ground at the time of purchase, converting a portion of their land investment into an immediate, often substantial tax deduction.
How does BirdDog help with Section 180 tax deductions?
Our role is to help you understand the tax code and put a defensible dollar value on the excess nutrients in your soil, so you and your tax professional can apply it to your specific situation. To be clear, BirdDog is not a tax firm and we don't give tax advice. What we do is deliver the soil data and fertility valuation that make the deduction possible, and we're glad to sit down with you and your CPA to align on how it applies and what to expect.
What if I bought my land more than 10 years ago?
You may still have options, and it costs nothing to check. Submit the form and we will tell you straight whether your purchase timing works.
Does this cost anything upfront?
No. The estimate is free and there is no obligation. If your land qualifies and you want a full study, we walk you through pricing before anything moves forward.
What happens after I submit my estimate?
You get your estimate right away. Then one of our land specialists reaches out to review the numbers with you and answer questions. No pressure, no hard sell.
Do I need my CPA involved to get started?
Not to get the estimate. When you are ready to file, we hand you a report your CPA can work from directly. Most CPAs have never seen Section 180, and the report does the explaining.
